The 28th annual Conference of Biological Society of Ethiopia took place in Addis Ababa


20-21 April 2018, Addis Ababa – Opening the conference, HE Ato Kebede Yimam, State Minister, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change indicated that Ethiopia’s huge diversity of biological resources create greater opportunity for implementation of Green Economy.

Thus, green growth is a necessity and an opportunity at the same time for the country, added HE Ato Kebede.
‘‘The production of eco-friendly products necessitates forging public-private partnership in joining forces to fully realize the goals set forth in climate resilient growth strategy of Ethiopia’’, mentioned the state minister.
He also remarked that Biological systems are the basis for improving crop and livestock production practices for higher food security and farmer income while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
He further said that the Ministry is mainstreaming biodiversity into diverse economic sectors of the country as a national focal point.
Dr. Yitbarek W/Hawariat, President, Biological Society of Ethiopia (BSE), on his part said that ‘‘the economic survival of various production sectors, and of the people depending on those sectors for their livelihoods, is connected to the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity’’.
Sectoral policies should be seen as an instrument to implement national biodiversity goals, Dr. Yitbarek added.

He also said BSE continued to use its annual conference as a suitable forum to address issues of public and national benefit.
On the conference oral and poster presentations were presented by participants from universities and institutions. And also Financial and audit report, future plans of BSE were also presented and discussed with participants.
The annual conference was held on the theme of “Harnessing Diversity of Biological Systems and Forging Private-Public Partnerships for Provision of Quality Products and Services: Implications to the Development of Green Economy and Entrepreneurship in Ethiopia”.
